Austin Is In The Running For The New Merck Tech Center And 600 Potential Jobs

Merck is looking to plant roots in Austin, and has their eyes set on the growing Innovation District that surrounds the Dell Medical School.

Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp. is one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies, making more than $39 billion in sales.  Merck is asking the city of Austin for $856,000 in incentives stretched over a 10-year span to build in downtown Austin.

This economic incentive agreement opens the door for 600 new jobs for the Austin area.  The new center would be responsible for data collection and design of technology platforms for "personalized, proactive and preventative healthcare", according to Merck.

Though Merck has strongly eluded to expanding to Austin, the final decision has not been made yet.  While Austin is hopeful, there are still 50 other cities in the running.
