A strong job market, livable wages and plenty of entertainment continues to make Austin a great city to live in, and for better or for worse, the rest of the nation is taking notice.

For the second year in the row, the U.S. News and World Report ranked the city of Austin as the best place to live in the nation.

Every year U.S. News ranks the top places to live throughout the United States, and this year Austin edged out Colorado Springs, Denver, Des Moines and Fayetteville, which rounded out the top five cities in the nation.

To determine the best places to live, the report compiles data from the 125 largest metro areas around the country, including the cost of living, job market, crime rates and quality of education.

The Austin metro already boasts about 1.94 million residents, and the city continues to attract new residents with median home prices of $278,608 and annual salaries of about $50,830, according to the report.

A strong job market and technology industry continue to attract residents to the Austin area. The city of Austin also added 37,300 new jobs in the 12 months ending in February, a growth rate of 3.7 percent, making Austin the second fastest growing major metro in the nation, according to Texas Workforce Commission.

Jobs in the science, technology, engineering and math sector accounted for 10.8 percent of all jobs in the Austin area in 2017, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This makes Austin the 6th most concentrated STEM job market in the nation.

New residents are also attracted to the Austin arts and music scene and festivals like the South by Southwest festival, according to the U.S. News.
