Jobs in Austin


Austin, Texas has developed into a high tech area.  IBM and Motorola were among the first technical companies to establish headquarters in Austin in the 1960s.  Today, many of the area’s major private employers are in the high tech field.

High Tech Companies

Dell is located in Round Rock and is the top private company in the area, employing over 14,000 people.  Other high tech employers include Freescale Semiconductor, IBM, Allied Materials, AT&T, AMD, and Apple,  Hewlett-Packard, Google, Cirrus Logic, Cisco Systems, eBay, PayPal, Bioware, Blizzard Entertainment, Hoover’s, Intel Corporation, National Instruments, Samsung Group, Silicon Laboratories, Oracle Corporation, Samsung, Hostgator and United Devices. The Austin area is some times called “Silicon Hills.”


The education sector is also a major employer in Austin.  The University of Texas at Austin employs 24,000 people.  Austin ISD and the other area independent school districts employ many more and there are numerous private schools in the area as well.


The medical sector is another primary Austin area employer.  The Seton Family of Hospitals employees 11,500 people while St. David’s Healthcare employs 6,600.  There are numerous other healthcare companies in the area as well. The city of Austin alone has 11 hospitals and the surrounding areas have many more.

Film Industry

In recent years, the film industry has begun to increase in Austin.  Cherry Bomb, The Tree of Life, and Secondhand Lions are among the films that have been partially filmed in the Austin, Texas area.  Friday Night Lights, a television show, was partially filmed in Pflugerville.  The Austin Film Commission works to promote the film industry in Austin.  Every year the Austin Film Festival and Conference is held in the fall and SWSX promotes the film industry as well as the music industry.

Restaurant Industry

There are also thousands of restaurants and clubs in the Austin area and many of them are hiring as well.
